| Dream Theater Albums. Any fans of Dream | | | | has enclosed a song about Portnoyâs |
| Theater in all likelihood already have this album; | | | | battle with alcoholism and various stages of |
| we cultivate to be a pretty devoted bunch, and | | | | recovery. The fifth and final song, âThe |

| I can probably put a full-stop to this review by | | | | Thereâs a bit of Six Degreesâ |
| saying dream theater is god and this album rules. | | | | theatricality, some of the weight and bitterness of |

| time, both melodically and thematically. Not | | | | two outings. After âThe Shattered |
| necessarily their heaviest, mind you, though it | | | | Fortress,â Black Clouds & Silver Linings |
| certainly is aggressive. Where much of their | | | | takes a slight detour in tone, as âThe |
| recent material has revolved around fictional tales | | | | Best of Timesâ (an ode to |
| of darkness, devils and history, these songs | | | | Portnoyâs late father) is much more |
| traffic in individual tragedy and reality; five of the | | | | bittersweet in its reminiscence. Musically, it |
| six concern the writersâ personal | | | | borrows heavily (almost intentionally so, it seems) |
| experiences. A jarring car accident, the death of a | | | | from early-80âs Rush, recalling both |
| father and a terrifying encounter in a foreign | | | | âRed Barchettaâ and |
| placeâthese subjects reflect the | | | | âThe Spirit of Radioâ in its |
| recordâs title. While there may be silver | | | | earliest half. The final track, âThe Count |
| linings and relief in some resolutions, they | | | | of Tuscany,â shares this similarity, |
| donât make the experiences any less | | | | opening with strong flashes of âLa Villa |

| Linings in appropriate mode. Itâs hard to | | | | Overall I feel that Black clouds and silver lining is |

| There are Petrucciâs face-melting riffs, | | | | your attention. This record might not pull |
| drummer Mike Portnoyâs spectacular | | | | everyone away from top-40 radio, but for |
| percussion, flowing melodies, lengthy guitar and | | | | everyone with a little lead in their ears, I ask |
| keyboard solos, and James LaBrieâs | | | | again: What are you waiting for? |
